President Trump has extended the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations by another 90 days.
The new deadline is September 17, 2025.
This is the third extension Trump has signed since retaking office. The first was in January, the second in April.
The move gives his administration more time to close a deal that would put TikTok under American ownership. The ban, which was supposed to take effect this week, remains paused for now.
The extension was confirmed on Truth Social on Thursday morning:
TikTok issued a statement thanking Trump for his support, noting the platform remains available to 170 million U.S. users and 7.5 million businesses.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, as reported by NBC News:
“President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”
How we got here
A law passed in April 2024 – the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act – required ByteDance to divest U.S. assets of TikTok or face a ban. The law was upheld by the Supreme Court.
ByteDance’s earlier efforts to spin off TikTok into a U.S.-controlled company stalled when China opposed the deal after Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports.
Amazon, Alexis Ohanian, and Steven Mnuchin were among the interested buyers in the last round of talks. ByteDance has not publicly confirmed whether it will proceed with a sale.
What’s next
It is unclear how many more extensions could be granted. Some lawmakers argue Trump has no legal authority to delay the ban further.
For now, TikTok continues to operate in the U.S., with major platforms like Apple and Google still supporting the app.
A March 2025 Pew survey showed that support for a TikTok ban in the U.S. has declined. Only about one-third of Americans now favor a ban, down from 50% two years ago.

Negotiations will continue over the summer. Whether ByteDance can complete a sale by the September deadline remains to be seen.
